A Letter to the People of Hap’chon and Korean Survivors of the Atomic Bombings

It is with gratitude and humility that I write to you. Gratitude that you, the people of Hap’chon and South Korea, welcomed Stonewalk Korea in 2007 and humility in the face of your willingness to share your painful stories and to allow us to express our sincerest apology for the suffering inflicted upon you by the United States and Japan.

It is fitting that the Stone which traveled from Busan to the DMZ, will come to rest in Hap’chon in the midst of those so terribly afflicted by the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945 in Hiroshima.

Many people were killed on that day, but many many others survived and have suffered every moment of every day of the past 63-plus years. The suffering has extended to the second and third generations. Some people have never been able to speak of the horrors they experienced then and still experience. Many have been struggling for decades to have their needs acknowledged and met. Realities of life for these many is a painful reminder of what people are capable of doing to one another.

On Stonewalk I am always reminded of the gravity of that reality. However, I also know that the Stone, because of its great weight, only moves slowly, and can be moved forward only if all of us move together in the same direction, step by step, shoulder to shoulder.

It is my fervent hope that we, the people of South Korea, Japan and the United States, will walk together with a wish, born out of compassion, for understanding and forgiveness, toward a peaceful world without hatred and enmity and without nuclear weapons.

I bow to you, Andrea N. LeBlanc
