Dear President Barak Obama,

The great news of your first visit to Hiroshima makes us feel there are many possibilities and hopes though we feel anxious and doubtful at the same time.

In the mid-summer of 2005, the sixtieth anniversary of the atomic bombing, Stone Walk members came to Japan from the USA. Led by them, many people from numerous countries including America and Japan got together and sweated together to draw the one- ton- memorial Stone on a caisson from Nagasaki to Hiroshima under the burning sun.

The way of the apology these American people felt about the atomic bombing by the USA greatly moved us. We began thinking of an apology to Korean people for the torments which the Japanese imperial government delivered during thirty-six years of colonization. After a while these thoughts led to the Stone Walk Korea in 2007.  Many A-bomb victims exist in Korea. They have been suffering from radiation-related diseases and are still suffering. After the Stone Walk Korea, the memorial Stone is lying peacefully in Hapchon, which is called ‘the Hiroshima of Korea’

We found that the heavy memorial Stone would not move at all only by the human strength of a few people, but the strength of many people could manage to move it. This seems to show that it is possible to realize the peaceful world without war if we strong-mindedly unite ourselves into one. The power of The Stone Walk made us feel the possibility. That was our greatest joy.

On the other hand, American diplomatic foreign policy extremely tends to lead to wars. To our deep regret Japan and Korea are the same. We fear that your visit to Hiroshima this time may result in enforcing the military alliance between the USA and Japan, and fear that it may cause more and more sacrifices to people living in the areas of American military bases including Okinawa, Yokosuka, and Iwakuni.

Please be all ears when you listen to A-bomb survivors when you visit Hiroshima!
Please bear the reality of the atomic bombing in your mind, and take concrete actions for the abolition of nuclear weapons!

Lastly, the memorial Stone of the Stone Walk Japan has been installed in the front yard of World Peace Memorial Church in Hiroshima for eleven years. Please pay a visit to the location and observe that Stone which was carried in all the way from America. Also please pay a visit to the cenotaph for Korean A-bomb victims in the Peace Park as well.

We do hope that you, President .Obama honor unknown civilians killed in war from the bottom of your heart and take a big step forward to realize a peaceful world without nuclear weapons.

With respect and deep prayer,

The Stone Walk Fukuoka Members
