On The 10th Anniversary of “Stonewalk Korea.”

Dear Stonewalkers and friends,

It is with a smile and a tear that I remember the journey of the memorial stone in 2007.
I remember the great effort that the Japanese members elicited to build the caisson and to create the stone with the same message for the Koreans honoring those affected by the bombing and the war.
I smile when I think of Andrea and I singing and dancing in one of the resting places along the road.  And there is a tear in my eye when I think of our stop at the home of the “Comfort Women” followed by marching to the Japanese embassy where the women held a vigil every week.
The Japanese Stonewalkers who brought an apology to the Koreans was perhaps the most significant and lasting message.  It was brought with each step on the long journey made with hard work, sweat and courageous energy.  And soon there will be a memorial in Hapcheon where visitors may come and honor those who have passed away and pledge to work for peace and an end to war.

To each person who helped to make Stonewalk Korea possible I bow three times and will forever hold you in my heart.
With gratitude and love,
Arigato
Dot Walsh

Please send my greetings and thank you to Jesuk Kang-san and the illustrator for the beautiful book.

It is the children we must turn to, whose understanding is crucial to the future of peace and justice in the world.  It is our responsibility to nurture their innate empathy and teach them ways to be compassionate in their actions.  The picture book, I hope, will reach many many children.  I was pleased to learn that Dot-san has a friend who will translate the words for us.

I remember clearly our meetings with many of the Comfort Women.  The vigil outside of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul was profoundly moving.  Seeing the Comfort Women there, many with their grandchildren, and knowing they came Wednesday after Wednesday, was inspiring.  Some of the women walked with us with the Stone for a short distance and then invited us to a lovely luncheon afterward where we had a chance to speak with them.  Our visit to the retirement home for the women and the museum there was an experience I will never forget. I have a number of photographs from the Embassy, walk, luncheon and that visit I could send you if you would like.

I am enormously impressed by the efforts of you and the entire SWK team, not only in creating Stonewalk Korea which took enormous planning and work, but also for bringing all this together for this anniversary commemoration.

My greetings and love to all of you in Fukuoka.  I wish I could be there with you this Saturday, but want you to know I will be thinking of you.

Andrea

My Message to the Children of Korea is the same message I give to my grandchildren and send to all the grandchildren of all the people all over the world.  It is a message about how we have choices to make every moment and that those choices can change the world.
It is a message about kindness.  It is a message about learning  who another person is and the things that make them happy …or sad.  It is a message about how all of us are more alike than we are different.  It is a message about looking for ways to solve problems without hurting anyone else.

The world we create will depend on the choices all of us make and what we nurture in our societies, ourselves and our own children and grandchildren. It will depend on the stories we tell ourselves and that we tell our children and their children. If we honor kindness and love above hatred and violence we must choose it. If we want peace, we must choose it for everyone

Stonewalk Korea was an extraordinary experience that has given me much to think about.  The images that are indelibly etched in my mind are one very positive one of the Comfort Women who choose to be present with such dignity and perseverance outside the Japanese Embassy every Wed. morning with their grandchildren at their sides.
The other, for me distressing, image is of all the very young school children climbing all over the tanks and planes at the War Memorial Museum waving 'victory signs' (not 'peace signs'!) and having their photos taken.
It was as if the planes and tanks were toys and war was a party!   I feel the same about the glorification of war here in the United States.
We have critical choices as societies and we can choose to honor the peacemakers rather than the war makers.   What we choose to celebrate and glorify matters. How we choose to be heard and how we listen to one another matters.
